Research Activity

Recent developments about the knowledge of active galactic nuclei inside galaxies have permitted to isolate a class of AGN that is characterized by very similar spectral properties on a large range of luminosities. Such class is associated to Black Holes accreting mass at very high rate.
We started a study of the properties of these objects on an ample range of redshifts (0<z<3), exploiting the data available form public surveys and proprietary spectra obtained with the LBT and GTC telescopes.
The goal is to understand the properties of these systems, their dynamics, their physical structure and chemical composition in the regions close to that of the emitting line regions visible in the optical and UV bands.
The stability of such systems in terms of mass/luminosity ratios give them the notable property typical of standard candles opening their use as distance indicators and potential probes for the cosmological model.
