Journal club
The Journal Club (JC) is a weekly meeting (usually held every Monday) in which first- and second-year PhD students have the opportunity to present a published scientific paper on any astronomical topic.
The aim of the Journal Club is to help students learn and improve how to present their own scientific research, in line with the typical requirements of conferences, seminars, and public outreach activities.
The JC rules are simple and listed below:
- Two presenters per session;
- Each presentation must last 15 minutes, followed by 5 minutes for questions;
- The paper topic can be any subject within astronomy; the article must not be older than 1–2 years, and none of the authors may be a collaborator of the presenter;
- To ensure active participation and to introduce students to the conference environment, the role of Chair has been introduced. The Chair is a student responsible for introducing the speakers, ensuring that time limits are respected, and either asking questions or inviting questions from the audience;
At the end of each meeting, students are required to fill in a feedback form to provide their opinions on all aspects of the presentation. This helps presenters improve their presentation skills;
Anyone is welcome to attend the JC, either in person or online; however, attendance is mandatory for first- and second-year PhD students.
To attend the JC online, the connection link can be found in the weekly emails sent via the Indico page, or by accessing the JC Indico calendar directly.
