Thesis title: "Stellar initial mass function radial variations in early-type galaxies"
Abstract: The number distribution of stars by mass in a stellar system, atbirth, is given by the initial mass function (IMF), and constitutes a fundamental component in the formation process of galaxies. The hypothetical universality of the IMF -- motivated by observations innearby stellar systems-- has been recently challenged by the discovery of a systematic variation with galaxy mass in early-type galaxies, towards an excess of low-mass stars in the most massive systems. However this global trend remains unexplained at present. We show for the first time, based on IMF-sensitive spectral features, that the IMF distribution depends sensitively on the galactocentric distance in massive elliptical galaxies, with an enhanced fraction of low-mass dwarf stars in the central regions. Such a result proves the local character of the IMF, that should no longer be considered as a global property of massive galaxies, and strongly suggests a qualitative difference in the formation process ofthe cores and the outskirts of massive galaxies. Our findings call for fundamental revisions of current theories of star formation and galaxy formation models.

Thesis title: "Observational properties of fossil galaxy groups from the FOGO project"
Abstract: Fossil galaxy groups (FGs) are extreme systems whose luminosity is dominated by a very massive early-type galaxy. In the current cold dark matter scenario, these objects formed hierarchically at an early epoch of the Universe and then evolved undisturbed until present day. In 2008, only a dozen FGs have been studied and the results of these studies were contradictory due to small statistic. For this reason we started a large observational program called FOssil Groups Origins (FOGO) with the aim to complete a comprehensive and multiwavelenght study of these systems. Here we present the optical characterization and global properties for our sample of 34 FGs candidates. Moreover, we will discuss their luminosity functions, trying to highlight differences between fossil and non fossil systems.
