Prof. Stanislav Smirnov (2010 Fields Medal) will be giving a talk in the occasion of the launch of a new European research network in theoretical and mathematical physics.
Prof. Smirnov is known for his work of the boundary between mathematics and physics (in particular, statistical physics).
Everybody is welcome to the talk, but please register to reserve your spot!
Title Tiles and puzzles
Abstract: Suppose we are given (an infinite supply of) a few different tiles (puzzle-pieces). Can one tile the whole plane? How many tilings will there be for a given area? If there are many, how a random one will look like? We will discuss how even for simple tiles, like two different polygons, these problems become very interesting and relate to many areas, from logic to statistical physics.
